WBP Activities

Steering Group Activities

The WBP Steering Group meet 3 times a year to set the overall steer and implementation of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan in Wales and the outcomes contained in the Environment Strategy, Wales. The group brings together all sectors in a partnership supported by the work of individuals, groups and organisations locally and nationally. Within this framework, specific task and finish groups are set up to tackle key issues identified by the WBP steering group. For details of WBP steering Group meetings, click on this link.

Wales Biodiversity Week

WBP coordinates an annual week of events held in June each year celebrating the variety and diversity of our wildlife and habitats. Events are free and are held all over Wales, enthusing, educating and enabling members of the public to become wildlife guardians on their patch. This year, Wales Biodiversity Week will run from 5th - 13th June.

WBP Conference

An annual Wales Biodiversity Partnership Conference is held to support, educate and enthuse biodiversity practitioners in Wales. This year conference will take place at Bangor University 15th & 16th September 2010,further information will follow in due course.

WBP Workplan

A significant part of WBP activities relates to key biodiversity outcomes contained in the Environment Strategy Wales. The associated actions are contained in the WBP Workplan.

  • Outcome 19: The loss of biodiversity has been halted and we can see a definite recovery in the number, range and genetic diversity of wildlife, including those species that need very specific conditions to survive.

Timeline: International commitment to halt loss of biodiversity by 2010. Recovery to be underway by 2026.

  • Outcome 20: The wider environment is more favourable to biodiversity through appropriate management, reduced habitat fragmentation and increased extent and interconnectivity of habitats.

Timeline: By 2010

  • Outcome 21: Sites of international, Welsh and local importance are in favourable condition to support the species and habitats for which they have been identified.

Timeline: By 2010, 95% of international sites in favourable condition; by 2015, 95% of Welsh SSSIs in favourable condition; by 2026, all sites to be favourable condition.

  • Outcome 22: Our seas will be clean and support healthy ecosystems that are biologically diverse and productive and managed sustainably.

In addition, a climate change adaptation plan, which sets out what actions will be taken to adapt to the impacts of climate change in Wales will be delivered.
